Word of the Day: Shirimasen

"Shirimasen" [ しりません ] [ shee | ree | mah | sen ] phrase: I don't know

Shirimasen is literally Japanese for "I don't know". Saying "Shirimasen" can prevent you from nosebleeding from a tough question in Japanese or any other language. Do not confuse "Shirimasen" with Sumimasen (Excuse Me), Shikansen (Bullet Train) or Shia LaBeouf (Supposedly "Hunky" actor). Saying "Shirimasen" is a great word too to learn in Japanese because of its hip and funky meaning (that last part made no sense).

Example:

Without "Shirimasen":
Mishka-kun: Bobu-san! Sumimasen, ima nanji desuka? Kyou wa nanichi nangatsu desuka? Tanjou biwa itsu desuka?
Random guy na itatago natin sa pangalang Bob: *Nosebleed*

With "Shrimasen":
Mishka-kun: Bobu-san! Sumimasen, ima nanji desuka? Kyou wa nanichi nangatsu desuka?
Bob: *shrugs* Shirimasen.
Mishka-kun: Kyou wa nanichi nangatsu desuka?
Bob: Shirimasen.
Mishka-kun: Tanjou biwa itsu desuka?
Bob: hachigatsu touka desu. I think.
Mishka-kun: You speak english? Why didn't you tell me?
Bob: (Eyes turn white and faints)
